Early underwater harvesting was hard work. The hard-hat diver of old put his catch into a small net. Then, wearing 150 pounds of equipment and weights, he would return to the boat above. With help from his tender, he would bring the net up the short iron steps and into the boat. A diver’s gear today is more sophisticated and much lighter (see page 44).
